Tito Sotto outs as Senate President, replaced by Alan Cayetano

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano replaced outgoing Senate president Vicente “Tito” Sotto III Monday, as Senate president Monday.

Senator Imee Marcos nominated Cayetano as Senate President following no objection from other senators, Sen. Joel Villanueva moved to close the nomination.

Broken down, 13 senators voted to elect Cayetano as Senate president while nine voted for Sotto. Two senators abstained.

Sotto served as Senate president for eight months. He replaced Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero who had replaced Sen. Juan Migual Zubiri as presiding officer.

In his speech as the new Senate president, Cayetano said the leadership change was not about the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, which the House plenary is set to vote on.

“Before us might be the impeachment. Let it be very clear: May mga lumalabas sa news na ang pagpalit ng leadership ay tungkol sa impeachment, hindi po,” Cayetano said.

Meanwhile, Sotto, Senators Ping Lacson, Kiko Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino, Raffy Tulfo, Erwin Tulfo, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Lito Lapid voted for Sotto.

Senators Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri and JV Ejercito, meanwhile, abstained.
