Senate under lockdown amid Bato dela Rosa attempted arrest

Newly elected Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano placed the Senate under lockdown on Monday after National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) personnel attempted to arrest Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.
The Office of the Senate Sergeant -at-Arms implemented the lockdown at around 3 p.m. following the failed arrest of dela Rosa.
“We want to restore order here in the Senate,” Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said.
Dela Rosa appeared at the Senate for the first time since November 2025 to attend Monday’s plenary session. He has not attended any session at the Senate amid claims that the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant of arrest against him over his links to the controversial war on drugs.
Senate CCTV footage showed that NBI personnel tried to block him from entering the premises.
A group of individuals ran after the senator, who was in a barong tagalog.
The chase went from the hallways to a fire exit of the Senate. At one point, dela Rosa tripped on the staircase in front of the pursuing NBI agents.
Dela Rosa made it to the plenary and voted for Cayetano, who replaced Senator Vicente Sotto III.
The NBI personnel who pursued Dela Rosa were cited in contempt and ordered detained in the premises.
The Senate also granted a motion placing Dela Rosa under the protective custody of the chamber.
According to the report, barbed wire was placed around the Senate complex. The entrance and exit area leading to the senators’ parking spaces were also partially blocked.
Police personnel were seen guarding the premises.
Vehicles coming in and out of the complex are also checked.
The NBI earlier said it has received a copy of the ICC arrest warrant against Dela Rosa in connection with the crimes against humanity case involving former President Rodrigo Duterte.
