MANILA – Deputy House Speaker and incoming Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla on Thursday met with outgoing Secretary Menardo Guevarra to discuss the turnover of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to the next administration.

At the end of a two-hour meeting, Remulla said he got a bird’s eye view of the DOJ and its attached agencies’ situation but declined to give specifics on the issues discussed.

“It’s a big work in progress na ating itutuloy at ating ilulunsad ang mga improvements na pwede gawin (It’s a big work in progress that we will pursue and launch improvements that we can undertake),” he said in a media interview.

Given the complex work to be done, Remulla said he would ask for a second meeting.

“We might ask for a second one [meeting] kasi masalimuot talaga ang problema ng sistema na kailangan natin isaayos. At talaga nakakatuwa naman na bigyan kami ng impormasyon na ukol sa mga suliranin na sumasambalot sa ating hustisya (We might ask for a second one because the problems are really complicated and we are glad that we were given information on the problems faced by our justice system),” Remulla said.

Government offices under the DOJ are the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), National Prosecution Service, Public Attorney’s Office, Bureau of Immigration, Land Registration Authority, Parole and Pardon Administration, Bureau of Corrections, the Presidential Commission on Good Government, Office of the Government Corporate Counsel, Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Office of the Solicitor General for budgetary purposes.

Remulla, 61, has been named as President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. ‘s choice for the DOJ. He is presently the representative of Cavite province’s 7th district and served as provincial governor.

He studied law at the University of the Philippines College of Law and passed the bar in 1986. He is a fellow of the Upsilon Sigma Phi fraternity whose members include the late former President Ferdinand Marcos, former solicitor general Estelito Mendoza, Ambassador Roberto Benedicto, and former NBI director Jolly Bugarin. (PNA)
