The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed boats and aircraft to provide security and support to around 40 to 50 Filipino fishing boats operating in the vicinity of Scarborough Shoal, or Bajo de Masinloc.

In a statement, the PCG said that since January 26, three vessels (8301, 4408, and 4409) and an aircraft have been stationed to protect fishing vessels from Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, and Mindoro.

“The PCG operation ensures the safety and security of Filipino fishermen from possible harassment by Chinese maritime forces. During the mission, PCG assets documented the presence of three China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels (3105, 3106, and 2307) in the area,” the PCG said.

“Despite the continued presence of these CCG vessels, Filipino fishermen have steadfastly continued to fish in these waters, exercising their rightful access to fish,” it added.

Scarborough Shoal is located 124 nautical miles off Masinloc, Zambales, and is considered within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Aside from providing security, fuel subsidies, fresh water, ice, and meal packs were also received by the fishermen.
