MMDA starts lining up bike lanes
Sunday saw MMDA workers all over EDSA painting the road lanes to designate the new bicycle lanes for people who wish to use two wheels going to and from their houses.
DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade earlier met with officials of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), led by Chairman Danny Lim, to discuss the establishment of protected bike lanes along EDSA. During the meeting, the DOTr and MMDA agreed to start construction of bike lanes on Saturday, 13 June 2020.
Further, Secretary Tugade and MMDA Chairman Lim decided to fast-track the establishment of the protected bike lanes on the roads and not on sidewalks, as more people are shifting to this active mode of transport, amid the crisis situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Transportation Chief emphasized that, “our goal is to move people while making sure of their safety.” The MMDA expressed its support for the construction of the bike lanes at the soonest possible time. MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said that the bike lane would provide at least 1.5 meters of space for bikers.
Further, the said project will be done in two phases: the interim and long term.
Also present in the meeting were MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia, LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III, DOTr Assistant Secretary for Procurement and Project Implementation Giovanni Lopez, DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Mark Steven Pastor, and MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Asec. Roberto Almadin.
