MANILA – The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, popularly known as Manila Cathedral, will be opening its crypt to allow the faithful to offer prayer for former archbishops of Manila.

Aside from their departed loved ones, the cathedral urged the public to also pray for late archbishops.

“As we celebrate the solemnity of All Saints and commemorate All the Faithful Departed, the Manila Cathedral invites the faithful to visit and pray at the tomb of our former archbishops now buried at the cathedral crypt,” it said in a social media post.

The cathedral crypt is the resting place for former archbishops of Manila. It is located underneath the church complex and is accessible by a stairway to the right of the altar.

Buried there are former Manila archbishops Michael J. O’Doherty, Gabriel M. Reyes, Cardinal Rufino J. Santos and Cardinal Jaime L. Sin.

The Manila Cathedral said its Blessed Souls Chapel shall also remain open for all the visiting faithful during the All Saints’ (Nov. 1) and Souls’ Days (Nov. 2) observance.

“The Blessed Souls Chapel is open as well for silent prayer for the repose of our departed relatives,” it said. “Prayers and Masses for them will be offered from Nov. 1 to Nov. 9, 2023.”

Traditionally during Nov. 1 and 2, Filipinos visit cemeteries and memorial parks to pay respects to their departed family members.

Those who will not be able to visit cemeteries usually visit the chapel to light candles and offer prayers and Masses for their departed loved ones. (PNA)
