Magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, Russia

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region, Russia, on Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake, which occurred at 2:58 a.m., was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), USGS said.

The US National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami advisory following the quake.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said “there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake.”

“Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1000 km of the earthquake epicenter,” PHIVOLCS said. Reuters
