Veteran election lawyer said he is willing to question before the Supreme Court a proposal to postpone the Dec. 1 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) to November 2026 if it is signed into law.

Lawyer Romulo Macalintal said withholding the conduct of elections means barangay and SK officials will stay in a holdover capacity for 1 year, robbing the people of a chance to elect new officials.

He pointed out the proposal moves the elections to the first Monday of November 2026, which is All Souls Day.

“Hindi naman dapat mahaluan ng politika ‘yung napakareligious na tradition natin,” he said, noting that many voters would be in the provinces during the holiday.

Macalintal questioned the need to postpone the elections, saying this should only be done if there is an emergency such as election violence.

He criticized Sen. Imee Marcos for saying that the postponement of the elections is “incidental.”

“Incidental lang ba ang karapatan bumoto?” he asked.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro earlier said the President would likely take action on the bill before August 14.
