Globe to offer eSIMs by end-September
MANILA – Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) is set to offer embedded subscriber identity modules (eSIM) to its prepaid subscribers before the end of September, allowing the purchase and activation of mobile services entirely online.
In a statement on Monday, Globe said it will offer eSIMs exclusively through its GlobeOne mobile app.
“Globe’s prepaid eSIM will be available by the end of the month, reinforcing Globe’s dedication to pioneering user-centric technological solutions,” it said.
Unlike conventional SIMs, eSIMs are built into smartphones and other devices such as smartwatches and cannot be removed. They are programmable and perform the same function as conventional SIMs.
The technology, it said, allows for a “digital-only model” where interested customers do not need to visit a physical store.
“It allows users to install multiple eSIMs on selected devices and use two phone numbers at the same time. Plus, the eSIM can also be used in devices other than mobile phones such as smartwatches, allowing seamless connection under one mobile number,” it said.
The technology can be utilized by the Apple Watch Cellular and would allow its users to use mobile services such as calls and data with their watch without bringing their iPhone.
In addition to being more convenient, it said eSIMs have a positive environmental impact by eliminating the need for plastic and removing the logistics required in selling physical SIMs.
“As the world pivots more towards digital solutions, Globe stands ready to lead its customers into a future marked by seamless connectivity and conscious choices,” it said.
In July, Smart offered the country’s first eSIMs to its prepaid users.
Other telecommunications companies such as DITO Telecommunity are yet to offer the service. (PNA)
