Tiangco says talks of House leadership change circulating

Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco disclosed discussions of a leadership shakeup in the House of Representatives since last week have been circulating.
Tiangco said some of his colleagues asking if they had enough numbers.
“Even last week they always ask me ano ba ang mangyayari sa atin dito, sirang-sira na papel natin, sirang-sira na pangalan ng Kongreso,” Tiangco said.
“They’re finding a way na huwag si [Bacolod] Rep. Albee [Benitez] ang ilagay at ang ilagay is someone na parang I heard Martin will give way to someone na he’s comfortable with,” Tiangco added.
The possible change in leadership in the House comes after government contractors Sarah and Curlee accused some lawmakers, including House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, of accepting kickbacks from infrastructure projects.
Romualdez and his colleagues vehemently denied the accusations, with some saying they will sue the Discaya couple.
Tiangco was asked if there was an impending leadership change after Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III replaced Sen. Chiz Escudero as Senate President on Monday.
Escudero’s ouster followed accusations of impropriety over his acceptance of P30 million campaign funds from government contractor Lawrence Lubiano.
Tiangco said he would support Benitez for the House Speakership.
“I don’t know if hindi pwedeng si Albee, ako kay Albee ako, that’s why I’m this vocal,” he said.
He said the leadership shakeup should be a “total overhaul” and that it could not be “a cosmetic change just to make it appear that we changed one person.”
